“This put me over the edge, I’m going to run”

That statement was written in one of the evaluations completed at the close of “Campaign 101,” a day of learning presented by the Iowa Democratic Party Women’s Caucus on April 26, held at the Temple of Creative Arts in Ottumwa.

Twenty-three women and two men attended including registrants, speakers, and panel members. The event was hosted by Mary Stewart of Ottumwa (pictured, at right), who arranged the venue and provided the continental breakfast and lunch, all within the beautiful performing arts facility. Mary Weaver, Iowa Democratic Party Women’s Caucus Chair served as emcee (pictured, at left).

One of the surprisingly highest rated presentations focused on nomination paperwork and financial reporting, and attendee evaluations suggested a longer session for future events.

This was followed by experienced campaign coordinator Julie Stauch (pictured), sharing information about “a new way to win” utilizing emotional appeal rather than simply stating policy positions.

Two panels were a part of the day, the first exploring how to prepare for a future run (pictured, at left) and then hearing from women with campaign experience (pictured, at right). These panelists received hearty rounds of applause for their realism and candor.

Sarah Trone Garriott, Iowa State Senator (pictured), spoke about how she was able to win over her previously right-leaning district through campaigns based on her commitment to and relationships among her community.

This was the fourth presentation of Campaign 101, previously offered at various locations throughout the state.
